Story time – Can you identify the past simple and past continuous words in the story?

Hi. My name is Fred. Yesterday was terrible for me because I stayed at home all day. I wanted to go outside, but it was raining. I was feeling tired of being trapped inside the house.

I tried to play with my younger brother, but he was doing his homework. My father was reading his book and my mother was watching TV.

After lunch, I decided to sit by the window and watch the street. Some people were waiting at the bus stop. While I was watching the street I witnessed an accident. A car couldn’t stop at the traffic lights and hit another car. Nobody was injured.

Now I am waiting for my friend. We will go to the park to play football together. I injured my knee while I was playing last week but it is okay now.

Remember

  • We use past continuous for actions in progress at a specific point in the past
  • We often use it when we want to describe an action in progress in the past interrupted by another action (this one in the past simple). Use when or as to link the two.
  •  When two actions in progress are happening at the same time in the past, we use while to link them.
  • Past continuous is also used to express what’s happening at the beginning of a story.
