Goal
We are going to work on the pronunciation of two words that we constantly use in English: "a" and "the". A correct pronunciation of these articles will drastically improve your overall speaking skill.
Weak and strong sounds
A and the have strong and weak pronunciations. We usually use the weak pronunciation when we are speaking. Look at these examples:
I’m reading a book. It’s an interesting book. The main character is a young doctor. The end was fantastic.
Listen and repeat:
a /ə/
a car
a song
an /ən/
an answer
an Englishman
the /ðə/
the sun
the cinema
the /ði/
the earth
the end
Conclusion
Have you finished? Let’s go to step 3!
