Lesson 12 – Step 3 – Superlatives

Goal
It’s time to revise superlatives. We will learn how to use them in a more skilful way.
You can watch the video or go straight to the written explanation. You decide! Once you’ve finished, you can move to step 4.
Language Discovery
Look at the words in blue in the text on step 1. What do they have in common?
- They are all superlative sentences.
General notions
Use superlative adjectives to compare the qualities of a noun to all the other nouns in a group.
The structure used is the following: (see level 4 lesson 6 step3)
subject + be+ the + superlative adjective + complement
SUPERLATIVES WITH IN
- Sydney ranks among the best in the world
- The city also obtained the highest score in the list
After superlatives, we often use in + names of places, or singular words for groups of people or things.
SUPERLATIVES WITH PRESENT PERFECT + EVER
- Tokyo might be the most impressive city I have ever visited.
- New York has the best restaurants I’ve ever been to.
After superlatives, we can use the present perfect +ever
SUPERLATIVES WITH THE LEAST
- My city might be the least impressive city in the world
We can use the least + adjective
The least = The opposite of the most
Conclusión
Ready? Terrific! Let’s move on to step 3 to practise what you’ve learnt in this step.
