General notions
Be going to
- We use be going to + verb to talk about:
- future predictions when we can see , or we know something is going to happen.There is evidence of it.
I | you / we / they | he / she / it | ||||
+ | I am going to | You We They | are going to | He She It | is going to | jump |
– | I’m not going to | You We They | aren’t going to | He She It | isn’t going to | jump |
? | × ✔ |
Are they going to jump? Is he going to jump? | Yes, they are. No, they aren’t. Yes, he is. No, he isn’t. |
Will
- We use the future simple to talk about:
- future prediction when we think, guess about the future. It is mainly an opinion.
+ | |
will catch him | |
I /He /She / It / You / We / They | – |
won’t catch him |
? | × ✔ | ||
Will | I / you / we / they / he / she / it | catch him? | Yes, they will. No, they won’t. Yes, he will. No, he won’t. |
Difference
You can use will or going to to make predictions about the future.
- Use going to when you see evidence that something is going to happen.
- Use will when the prediction is what you think, but have no apparent evidence.
