Pet lion taken by authorities after TikTok videos

Cambodian authorities have confiscated* a lion after they saw people cuddling* and bathing* it in videos on social media. They were keeping the animal illegally as a pet.

People have seen this young declawed* and fangless* lion in videos on social media. According to Cambodian officials, a person from China imported the lion to Cambodia, and was raising it at a villa in the capital Phnom Penh.

The officials started an investigation in April, after they discovered some footage* of the 70 kg lion on TikTok. In those images, the lion is sitting on a driveway* and someone is spraying* it with a hose* when it was a young cub*.

The organization Wildlife Alliance wrote on Facebook  that the “conditions at a residential home are inappropriate* for a wild animal (…) In addition, removing the fangs and claws from a lion drastically* reduces its quality of life.”

“People have no right to raise rare wildlife as pets,” Neth Pheaktra, from the environment ministry, said. The lion has since been confiscated.

What are authorities going to do now? They have not announced whether they will take legal action against the owner.
