2. Read the text from step 1. What problem did Laura have? Why did it happen? What can she do to avoid having the same problem in the future?

People love to make promises, but sometimes they are impossible to keep. That’s what happened to Laura.

“Would you like to come to my party next Saturday evening?” Jenny asked her.

“That is so nice of you! I’ll come!” Laura replied with a big smile on her face.  Then she turned around and met Tanya, who asked her:

“Do you want to come with us to the fair on Saturday evening?”

“Thanks so much for inviting me,  I’ll be there”, she said.

That will be complicated because she can’t be at two places at the same time. She won’t be able to keep both promises.

Later in the day she was talking to Mark at a coffee shop.

“What are you going to do on Saturday? Mark asked. That’s when she realised what she had done.

“I’m going to Jenny’s party and… Oh no! I said yes Tanya too! I can’t go to two places at the same time.” Laura said.

“Oh dear…” Mark replied. “What are you going to do?”

“I think I’ll go to Jenny’s party because I promised her first. But I will also talk to Tanya and apologise. Will she be angry at me?”

“No, I don’t think so. I think she’ll understand. She’s very easygoing.”

Now Laura has learnt the lesson. You have to be careful what you promise.

3. What promises do people make but usually not keep? Write them in your notebook. Do you remember the last time someone made one of those promises to you?

4. How do you imagine the future? Make predictions about what the world will be like in 2050.

e.g: Houses will be more efficient and will have lots of solar panels.

5. Decide 6 things you will do after class.
